Enterprise MCS


Enterprise MCS (eMCS) for UNIX, Linux or Wintel platforms provides a transaction processing subsystem that provides the benefits of the Unisys COMS mainframe-based transaction processing subsystem. This is a low-risk and high performance multi-user, multi-tasking operating environment. Progeni's eMCS controls the flow of messages between terminals and application programs. Capabilities provided include:

  • Multiple users sharing a single copy of an application program

  • Automatic execution and termination of application programs

  • Transaction based message routing

  • Control of user access to application programs

  • Support of program to program message routing

Progeni's eMCS accepts screen data, and then communicates with the required application and sends the data to it. It also controls application runs. Progeni's eMCS also keeps track of the last time each application received a message. When the calculated time is greater than the pre-defined elapsed time for the application, it will automatically terminate the application.

Why Enterprise MCS?

The load engendered by servicing concurrent users depends upon the technology employed. The cost includes system resources consumed by these technologies and in many cases, the license fee structures per connection. Progeni's eMCS reduces demand for memory on the server and has a single, one time perpetual license fee. In addition to reducing potential expenditure on extra system resources and the cascading license fees associated with alternative technologies, Progeni's eMCS also solves major security risks inherent in those technologies.

Utilities usually incur costs based on the number of users and each user connection consumes Mega Bytes of memory, consisting of the basic footprint of a virtual machine plus memory for each application accessed via this connection. Often each user makes a separate connection to the DBMS. This is also true if the application is deployed on a desktop where its footprint in the server is traded for added network traffic, program downloads and data transfers to and from a remote database. Under eMCS these issues are avoided and network traffic is limited to screen data transfers.

As in COMS, eMCS supports ten applications being accessed by ten users with only ten processes. Progeni's eMCS reduces the complexity of setup and administration for each workstation and for database access and reduces problems associated with data resource sharing to ensure data integrity. The connected database is also isolated from the potential of unauthorized and/or uncontrolled program access via the workstation.

Running under eMCS retains the original characteristics of the application runtime environment resulting in a much lower risk. Conversely without eMCS, to have application(s) that currently run in a COMS runtime environment involves a significantly more invasive code conversion. The more changes implemented to code logic addressing shared data resource issues, the greater the need for regression testing. Running under eMCS presents a lower risk of negative impact on the overall project schedule.
